Kannur University initiates process to check plagiarism

The KU Syndicate has decided to implement the UGC’s guidelines for ensuring the originality of the research theses being submitted by research scholars, though practical features of the anti-plagiarism measures being taken will be decided when they are ready for implementation.

Once the UGC’s guidelines are implemented, the anti-plagiarism certification will be mandatory for submitting research theses.

MHRD seeks Visitors Inquiry against Jamia VC

The MHRD has sought the President’s approval to launch a “Visitorial Inquiry” into the matter, as well as other allegations of administrative and financial irregularities against Talat Ahmad.

Reportedly, the government has recommended that the University Grants Commission (UGC) conduct a probe into at least five charges, including wasteful expenditure on the NAAC visit, arbitrary introduction of a supernumerary quota in admissions for wards of university staff and misuse of government accommodation.

MHRD announces new UGC foreign academic collaboration regulations

The degree will be awarded by the Indian Educational Institutions (IEIs) alone; joint degrees are not permitted. However, the name of the collaborating FEI can be indicated on the degree, the logo and primacy being of the Indian institution. Credits from collaborating FEI when jointly signed by the IEI shall form part of the transcript. FEI may also sign the transcript/credit issued by the IEI.

No retrenchment on account of API & workload: MHRD

Direct teaching workload restored to 16/14/14 hours per week for Assistant Professors/ Associate Professors/ Professors, direct teaching hours to include Tutorials/ Practicals / Field Work also apart from Lectures/Project Supervision.

Mentoring by Professors and teachers to be also recognized while calculating direct teaching score and achieving of minimum scoring in direct teaching dimension of API possible with these changes.

Regarding research dimension of API cap on API, brought in by the 2nd amendment, removed.

MHRD panel recommends creation of National Higher Education Fellowship Fund to give 10 lakh fellowships

As per the report, “A National Higher Education Fellowship Fund may be created, which will offer 10 lakh new fellowships annually for qualified students belonging to economically weaker sections to pursue higher study.”

The Committee is satisfied that this step will improve equity and accessibility in the higher education sector, it added.

Presently, the UGC currently distributes about Rs 1050 crore annually as higher education tuition or fellowship to about 82,000 beneficiaries covering 35,000 fellowships each year.

UGC extends the Fergusson College's demand for autonomous status

The autonomous tag will benefit the students seeking to pursue BSc at the college, but also aspiring to learn psychology or economics for credit.

The change in curricula will come into effect from the 2016-17 academic year. This means the current students, those in their second or their year of respective courses, will face no changes as far as their syllabus is concerned.

The curricula will change only for the new students taking admission in the first year of bachelor's and master's course in both Arts and Science faculties in the year 2016-17.

New Deemed University Regulations to offer greater autonomy, reduce bureaucratic control

Owing to certain stringent and regressive clauses, the 2010 regulation has been contentious (mostly within private Deemed universities) since its inception.

President FICCI, Harshavardhan Neotia while endorsing the above move by the Ministry emphasized that this announcement clearly indicates the current government’s intent to liberalise higher education in the country.  This move is in line with FICCI’s vision for higher education and will be a game changer with a positive impact on the availability of highly skilled workforce in the country.

PU yet to receive 100 Crore grant from MHRD

Reportedly, the university is likely to receive a portion of the sought after grant this month. The file for sanction of the grant is currently pending with the joint secretary of the University Grants Commission (UGC).

For the academic session of 2016-17, the MHRD had sanctioned a grant of Rs 176 crore for the varsity in March.

UGC to stop funds to institutions not registered with PFMS

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has toughened its stand as a large number of higher educational institutions are yet to join the system despite repeated requests since April last year.

The system has been created by the Finance Ministry for online transfer and management of funds to ensure transparency.  “Henceforth, beneficiary institutions will not receive any financial assistance from the UGC unless registered on PFMS portal,” H Devaraj UGC Vice Chairman said.

UGC restores direct teaching hours workload

V S Oberoi, Higher Education Secretary said that the direct teaching work load has been restored to 16, 14, 14 hours per week for Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and Professors respectively. This was done through necessary amendments to the UGC norms.

He also held out an assurance that there will be no retrenchment of teachers on account of API and workload criteria including those who are teaching 'ad-hoc'.
