MHRD seeks Visitors Inquiry against Jamia VC

The MHRD has sought the President’s approval to launch a “Visitorial Inquiry” into the matter, as well as other allegations of administrative and financial irregularities against Talat Ahmad.

Reportedly, the government has recommended that the University Grants Commission (UGC) conduct a probe into at least five charges, including wasteful expenditure on the NAAC visit, arbitrary introduction of a supernumerary quota in admissions for wards of university staff and misuse of government accommodation.

UGC eases norms for deemed universities

The UGC has removed restrictions on the appointment of deemed university chancellors allowing promoters of the institution to occupy the post. This was prohibited under the old regulation of 2010.

Another amendment provides for government nominees only in universities which are either controlled by the Centre or receive at least half of their funds from it. For the remaining, UGC will appoint a nominee out of a panel of names made by a search committee.

Gujarat to stop grant to colleges without NAAC accreditation

Reportedly, as many as 96 colleges in the state have failed to get accreditation from NAAC.

These colleges haven't received NAAC accreditation even once. A three-day meeting of the principals of these colleges will be held.

Ganesh Hegde, deputy adviser of NAAC, will attend the meeting with the colleges.

NAAC introduces new grading pattern for assessment and accreditation

Since the year 2007, NAAC has been using the 4 Point Grading (A,B,C and D) with CGPA and Descriptors for each of the Alphabetical grade assigned.

“To reflect the institutions performance levels more distinctively as recommended and approved by the Executive Committee of NAAC, the Grading system has now been changed to a seven point system.” said, Prof D P Singh, Director, NAAC 

The revised grading system as given below will come into effect from 1st July 2016.

Andhra University facing acute faculty shortage

The Andhra University is facing major challenge as it is dealing with the acute shortage of teaching staff.

Recently, it’s National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) rating has also been a major disappointment as it has been downgraded.

The varsity is also facing issue of fund shortage while its NAAC score for 2016 was 3.6 out 4 points, which was a steep fall from the earlier 3.96 points, chiefly because of the lack of teaching staff.

Academicians welcome UGC move to grant autonomy to A grade colleges

SP Thyagarajan, former Vice Chancellor, University of Madras said, “This is a welcome step as 90 per cent of autonomous colleges are doing better than affiliated colleges.”

“A few years ago, a UGC panel on affiliation reforms discussed the need to reduce load on universities because of affiliated colleges. In some cases 900-1000 colleges were affiliated to a university, which was unable to focus on syllabus revision, and reforms in teaching and learning,” he said.

MJP University initiates process for permanent faculty appointment

The move came after an experts' team that recently visited the university campus for National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accreditation had raised the issue of standard of quality education at the varsity.

Reportedly, the team said university has more number of guest faculty than the standard limit in all departments. A few branches of engineering department have 90% guest faculty.

NAAC reconsidering accreditation parameters, to introduce new sub categories

NAAC Director D P Singh said existing set of parameters used for the evaluation of institutions of higher learning is being re-looked at present in a bid to incorporate the criteria such as efforts taken by institutions in solving problems in their respective localities, spreading awareness about gender sensitisation, making campuses friendly for the disabled and weeding out the ragging menace are among several measures that will soon reflect in their grading by NAAC.
