There have been allegations that the MCI has been reduced to only a advisory body and seems to push and protect the interest of private sector. There are issues of corruption and mis-governance in MCI, which are taking toll of medical services in India.

It further added that Indian medical colleges are churning out doctors but barely any researchers.

As per the report, over 332 of 579 (57%) medical colleges didn't publish a single research paper between 2005 and 2014. It refers to a recent report of the parliamentary standing committee on health, which called for the scrapping of the Medical Council of India (MCI), mentioning that the Supreme Court has described the state of medical colleges as "rotten", and says research is seen as a "non-profitable activity" by Indian medical schools.

Centre defers NEET by a year on demand by states

The decision comes after a meeting chaired between Union Health minister J.P. Nadda and other state health ministers over the matter.

The meeting was convened after several parliamentarians opposed the common medical entrance test, saying the NEET has created confusion among the students who have already applied for the state entrance exams.

 the syllabus of the CBSE being different than what the State Boards followed. Moreover, the States also pointed out that NEET should be allowed in regional languages in addition to Hindi and English in order to have parity for the students who have taken the State Board exams.

The Union Health Minister stated that the expressed views and concerns of the States shall be collated and soon a future course of action shall be thought of. He further said that the Government was committed to bring about transparency in medical education and remove malpractices.

Govt likely to split MCI for segregating powers

Recently, a parliamentary standing committee came out with a damning report on MCI, stating its composition was “opaque” and “biased” against larger public health goals, the Union ministry of health is working with the Niti Aayog on its restructuring, at the behest of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

On the agenda are “smaller and cohesive” bodies having a three-way division of power, with the government having the right to give binding directions.

The standing committee tearing into the functioning of the MCI has recommended that the Act under which it was set up be scrapped and a new legislation be drafted "at the earliest".

There was hardly any aspect of the functioning of the council that did not come in for stinging criticism in the report of the committee tabled in the Rajya Sabha. The health ministry too came in for strong criticism for being a mute spectator for decades and not taking initiative to step in and stem the rot.
