Jnanpith award winner UR Ananthamurthy has been appointed as the first Chancellor of Central University, Karnataka, Gulbarga. President Pranab Mukherjee, in his capacity, as the Visitor of the Central University, has made the appointment.
He will hold the post for five years, according to a press release from the office of the registrar of the university.
The 80-year old veteran litterateur earlier served as the Vice-Chancellor of Mahatma Gandhi University in Kottayam in Kerala. He was also president of the Sahitya Akademi and Chairman of the National Book Trust, India, New Delhi.
Born in 1932 at Melige village in Shimoga district, Prof. Ananthamurthy started his career in the Department of English in the University of Mysore as a professor and instructor.
He has also served as a visiting professor in many renowned Indian and foreign universities including Jawaharlal Nehru University, Eberhard Karls University of TĂźbingen, University of Iowa, Tufts University and Shivaji University.
